Hotel 5x01 Checking-in: "This season has something different"

So … I am so happy to write for you my first review ever about the first episode of AHS: Hotel entitled ”Checking-In”. Before I start writing, I say that at the end of the review I write the part I liked most, the part I liked less and I give to it also a mark 1/10. And a last thing, this is a SPOILER!

The episode starts with two beautiful Swedish girls that are going to check-in, but these two are not satisfied because the hotel is too far from the main attractions of Los Angeles. They ask for a refund, but the receptionist, Iris, says to them that she doesn’t give money back to anybody. So the two poor girls are forced to stay in this retro and unusual hotel. In the hotel there isn’t any sign, so they can’t call anybody, but they can you the telephone in the room. The given room to them thinks a lot and they want to change, but Iris is very rude and says it is not possible because all the other rooms are reserved. Now the terrifying parts begin. The smell comes from the bed, and when they take out the blanket they see there is a seam in the mattress and with a knife they open it … and what comes out? 

A sort of old decaying man! Personally I didn’t find so scary this part, maybe because I already expected that there was something inside that mattress. I think they should have put a sort of monster or a warped man. Let’s move on with the plot. Iris give to the girls another room because of the strange happened. Here we can understand that Iris is a liar because before she had said that there were no free rooms. She explains that they never rent out the room 64. 

After this introduction of the Hotel Cortez, where we get that strange things happen. We can meet one of the main characters of this season: John Lowe, interpreted by Wes Bentley. 

We immediately understand he is a detective because his introduction opens with a crime where there are two lovers crucified in a bed.

 This one was one of the creepiest part of the episode because the man was still alive, but he didn’t have his tongue neither his eyes. Ew! John also receives a call by someone that we don’t know and this voice says that the murder happened in the Hotel Cortez, room 64. After another episode that happens later, John decides to go to “live” in the Hotel until he resolves the case. Now I want to talk about the introduction of the Countess and her lover Danovan, Iris’ son. I loved when they went together to the open-air cinema through the cemetery walking like the Royal Family. They catch a couple and they invite them for an orgy, yes you read right! But till now I wasn’t shocked. I was inhibited when they killed them with their gloves and they didn’t stop, instead they started to lick the blood from the dead bodies. Shit Gaga and Matt, you are so dirty and criminal at the same time!

I want to talk also about the new role of Sarah Paulson, who interprets Sally a drug addict. In a flashback we can see that she was her to bring Danovan and his mother into the Hotel, and nowadays she is Iris’ enemy. Till now I her role of villain enthused me so much like in the former seasons. I hope we will see more cruelty in her.

Other characters we met in this first episode are Liz Taylor and I found him or her so fab, Alex Lowe, John’s wife and Will Drake with his son. Oh and we mustn’t forget Gabriel, another drug addict.

The scene I liked most: The orgy scene 

I liked it very much because besides it was very hot, it was at the end very shocking. I expected it but not in this way
The part I liked less: The old man that comes out from the mattress

I didn’t like so much because it was not so scaring and I expected this part. I don’t like when I expect something and I guess it.

I loved this first episode in general, there are many surprises and I think the set is just great. I do not know why but this season has something different. Perhaps the fact that there are new players, but it is different, scary, sexy, bloody, all these elements create an atmosphere that fascinate me.
